Nepalese Wool Rugs
In 2009 I was invited to participate in the highly successful Weaving Art And Change, Fair Trade project curated by Isabella Holding. It was exciting to consider working in the medium of rug design and since then I have developed my own relationship with the Kumbeshwar Technical School in Nepal to develop a range of beautiful hand dyed and woven 100 knots per square inch pure Tibetan woolen rugs. KTS is a non profit workshop established in 1983 to assist socially and economically disadvantaged Nepalese women and disabled individuals. Initially established as a school for the poor, KTS now also undertakes vocational training in knitting, carpet weaving and woodwork. It runs short-term practical courses where participants are paid for their work and receive free day-care and primary school education for their children. The training is popular as it allows disadvantaged people to gain skills, earn a living and develop self esteem. The program is self-supporting as carpets woven, garments knitted and cabinets made are sold to provide ongoing support to the program. All KTS training courses and the products produced conform to Fair Trade practices and standards and KTS works in partnership with the RugMark Foundation, which rescues children from child labor. At KTS only adults work to make the rugs while children of the workers and orphans are educated so they can aspire for a better future.
Each rug sold assures a better brighter future for KTS and its team.
