Marginal Land: These images are inspired by tough country; land that resists farming. A paddock can appear as a single geometry, parceled and defined by its fence and location within a particular climatic zone. Inside the confines of the fence are multitudes of subtle variations of conditions which require the farmer to manage each paddock individually. A rocky outcrop, steep embankment or water-logged hollow may resist the plough altogether. Changes in soil depth, texture and composition will affect the quality of the paddock’s yield. These paintings explore the character of variations which are often unnoticed by the casual observer. An overlay of mesh grids manipulates scale and alludes to the vastness of the Australian landscape, mapped through fence and farming. Dry earthy pigments are chosen reflecting the harsh nature of many farmed landscapes within Australia.
