Elements: Inspiration for work comes from spending time in landscapes; usually with a camera, sketch pad and a bucket for collecting. Making note of the surroundings and conditions is important. There might be a fresh breeze that waves the grasses or ruffles hair. Perhaps it is a wind with stronger intentions, throwing up dust or sand to be barricaded against. The sun might be a cold sneer through winter cloud or a welcoming friend, warming the spring air. The time of day is important; the haze of summer noon, the cloak of fog and sparkle of frost at winter dawns, rich colour and long shadows of autumn afternoons and perfume scented spring days are all influences. Walking, noting, photographing and sketching are all processes undertaken in landscape. Collecting things that catch the eye might include; a rusted knot of fencing wire, a single parrot feather, a bronzed leaf, a clump of grass, a coloured stone, a hand full of earth. These things, and more, create a palette of colour and texture, composition and scale to work from back in the studio.
